YEMEN BLUES REVIEW AFTER GLOBALFEST NY

“Kahalani spun out chants to rapt silence and then the band, a punchy nine-piece amalgam that can break into percussive gallops on impulse, turned up the energy… at some point before the set’s end onetime New York-based bassist Omer Avital, the band’s seated co-founder, had played oud, jumped up to dance with Kahalani while twirling a white scarf and then strapped on a Höfner (read: Paul McCartney-style) bass for the danceably climactic closer.” (K. Leander Williams, The Village Voice Blog)

“Raw and rooty are two good words for this young and wide-wandering band founded by the Yemeni Jewish singer Ravid Kalahani and Israeli bassist Omer Avital that at evokes New Orleans second-line bands, the mesmerizing and earthy sounds of West African stringed guimbri, and rocking Middle Eastern rhythms, all coursing together in a raucous party of a stage show. With Kalahani’s soulful vocals alternating between the grit of the Mississippi Delta to the falsetto of Prince-style funk, Yemen Blues was one of the breakout favorites from this year’s globalFEST lineup.” (Anastasia Tsioulcas, NRP)

YEMEN BLUES at Fête de la Musique Paris

June 21st is the known as the shortest night all over Europe and people celebrate music all over the cites with Fête de la Musique. The Fête de la Musique began in Paris in 1982, and was founded by the popular French cultural minister Jack Lang. The festival originated in a humble burst of musical idealism and a few power connections, and yet, in only two decades has become a wildly popular global event. The Fête de la Musique is free of entrance charges and the home of this festival, Paris, is hosting YEMEN BLUES this year. Showtime is 8pm at the Musée d’Art Juif. We hope to see our French fans around tomorrow.

Farewell DORTMUND, see you in POZNAN @ ETHNOPORT FESTIVAL tonight!

“The Israeli-American band Yemen Blues tore down fences between Yemeni and African music, pop, jazz and funk, and the audience with the domicil on Thursday evening. As part of the KlangVokalFestival singer Ravid Kahalani and his eight musicians came like a warm desert storm over the audience. At the beginning the band dancing – in the end of the show everyon did.” (www.ruhrnachrichten.de)

NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME FROM – SEE YOU SOON

After touring France, Spain, the US and Cananda YEMEN BLUES finally arrive to Germany performing at KlangVokalFestival Dortmund tonight, Thursday, June 16th, 8pm. We are happy to return around the area that already gave us a warm welcome last year when we performed Altstadtherbst Düsseldorf. This time we gonna arrive with our debut album which is only available on tour at the moment and comming out in Europe later this year. Ravid says: “We have an amazing summer ahead of us. We are going all over the world, performing at the biggest stages. After the great success at WOMEX and BABEL MED music fairs we have high expectation to fulfill, I guess. But I know the people that luckily are with me on stage are top musicians and playing the music with their hearts – so I have no worries. Hope to see you around tomorrow.”

ABOUT YEMEN BLUES

is an original and fascinating meeting of traditional Yemenite melodies with the world of blues, jazz and funk. Flavours of West African roots and enhanced modern compositions are creating a breathtaking experience and a mixture of beautiful complex grooves with an amazing live energy where ever this band enters the stage.
YEMEN BLUES was founded 2010 by Ravid Kahalani, a rising star in Israel who grew up in a traditional Yemenite family. He learned the language and the traditional chants of his origin. Kahalani extended his influences in the areas of blues and West African soul, from the Sahara desert through classical Opera singing to Afro-American blues. He joined forces with Omer Avital, a well known bass player and composer from New York, and together they created YEMEN BLUES, a supergroup of top musicians from New york, Israel and Uruguay. They soon got noticed within the music world around the globe and attracted media and promoters with their imressive and intense showcases at music fairs like BABEL MED or WOMEX. Since these days they are bringing their music to audiences around the world. YEMEN BLUES is “a language you will understand no matter where you come from”, singer Ravid Kahalani says. “It is my origin and my influences all together as well as meeting with this group of amazing musicians.”

YEMEN BLUES concerts are an ultimate celebration of African grooves, a pure happiness & deep emotion Yemenite singing, a new music experience and innovative sound – with a strong message.
